With the average cost of a UK wedding soaring year by year it’s no surprise that brides are on the lookout for ways to stretch their budgets. With this in mind, we’ve pulled together our top tips and ideas to help you make the most of your wedding cake budget ready for your big day… At Sugarbliss Cake Company we also offer a beautiful collection of simple wedding cakes ideal for a smaller wedding reception or budget.
1. Move away from fruit cake
Although fruit cakes are a wedding tradition, not everyone one likes them and they tend to be an expensive option. Replacing a fruit cake tier with a chocolate, lemon or vanilla sponge will save you money and give your guests a delicious alternative. If you’re looking for a spectacular centrepiece but don’t have lots of guests, using a cake dummy instead of a fruit cake will save you money and cut down on waste.
2. Downsize your centre piece
If you’ve set your heart on a particular style of cake but your budget won’t stretch that far then you could opt to have a cake with fewer tiers. A plain sheeted cake in the kitchen will cut down on decorating time and provide the extra portions.
3. Keep it simple
A professional cake maker will spend many hours creating an intricately decorated cake. Choosing a cake with simpler decorations or asking your cake maker about alternative styles that are quicker and easier to make can be a great way to spread you budget.
4. Smaller slices
Standard cake portion sizes are 1”x 1” for fruit cake and 1”x 2” for sponge cake. You’ll struggle to cut your fruit cake tiers smaller, but can increase your servings by offering 1”x 1” portions of sponge cake too.
5. Make your own
If you’re confident in your cake decorating skills and love the idea of adding a personal touch to your special day, making your own cake can be a cost effective solution. If you’re considering this option you need to be realistic about what you can achieve and whether you’re going to have the time. Be sure to check in advance that your venue is okay with this too. If you are making your own cake we suggest you keep it simple and definitely don’t attempt anything you haven’t tried before. Using readymade decorations is a great time saver – handmade edible decorations like SugarSoft® roses not only look beautiful but taste great too.

6. Respect your budget… and your cake maker
Budgets are there for a reason and it’s important that you do your best to stick to them. If you have hired a professional to make your cake then be upfront with them about your exact budget when you talk about the cake you would like. This’ll help them use their professional expertise to come up with ideas and sketches of what you can realistically be achieved with the budget you have available. Be prepared to compromise if your budget is very tight and you’ve set your heart on an elaborate cake.
